VERICUT reduces the burden on LS Automotive’s programmers with technical support and updates.

Korea’s leading electrical apparatus manufacturer, LS Automotive, became aware of the CNC machine simulation and optimization software VERICUT while seeking out software that could help optimize their overall manufacturing process. With a thorough process of testing VERICUT’s capabilities, LS Automotive confirmed the benefits of the verification and optimization process, such as accurate machining and no misses on all electrodes. Reliable support from the developer of the software, CGTECH, was another key benefit that the company appreciated.

Established in 1973, then called DAESUNG Electronics CO., was incorporated into an LS affiliated company (LS Mtron) in 2008. Now the company has become one of the largest market shareholders for vehicle switches, relays and various automobile components in Korea. The company has earned its position as a trusted electrical apparatus partner in the global market as well. Believing that guaranteed quality and reliable manufacturing management are the top qualifications in order to further expand its global business, LS Automotive continuously invests in new technologies to help with optimizing the overall manufacturing process and quality control.

Program errors can cause a dangerous situation during machining. So assurance that the program is flawless is needed for both programmers and the machining team. – Namjun Heo, CAM team leader

The CAM team leader, Namjun Heo, and his associate, Daehee Kim, tested several options before purchasing VERICUT. At first, they saw the software as a process optimization tool, but during the test they realized the crucial value that verification could bring to the team. Daehee says that a CAM program could verify the final workpiece but VERICUT can do much better. VERICUT verification provides detailed information on missed cuts, gouges, and measurements. The software also enables the CAM designer to simulate electrodes for the part.

“When we first began to use VERICUT, every other day we started to find improvement points in the program and errors that were never detected by the CAM program. Because our products are becoming smaller in size, precise machining is essential and often times more electrodes are required. With VERICUT, I run gouge checks and electrode simulation using my computer to make necessary changes to the program before the program is sent to the shop for actual machining.” – CAM team associate, Daehee Kim

“The unexpected was expected to happen before VERICUT”, said Kisoo Kim of LS Automotive’s MOLD and DIE team. “We had to go thru the entire manufacturing process in order to find the errors. When a mistake was unveiled while assembling the pieces or after injection molding equipment was set at the shop, we would have to rewind the whole process, fix the program, and redo the process without confirmation that all errors were fixed. It was an expensive and time-consuming process. Now we save time and money with VERICUT.”

LS Automotive supplies many major automobile manufacturers around the world, requiring a large volume of shipments. If LS Automotive misses the timeline or fails to meet the quality standards, the company’s credibility will be jeopardized and might need to bear the expenses for faulty goods disposal. Knowing that VERICUT’s implementation will prevent any miss-do caused by the CAM program, the CAM team actively took one more step in their work process and made a habit of running VERICUT to make sure the CAM program is ready for perfect machining.

Namjun values VERICUT’s continuous support for the software. CGTech understands the need for technical support, especially at the beginning of implementation and makes sure essential training and support are made available for the VERICUT users.

“Program errors can cause a dangerous situation during machining. So assurance that the program is flawless is needed for both programmers and the machining team. VERICUT is relatively new to the Korean mold and die industry but CGTech helped us to build trust in the software with timely technical support.” – Namjun Heo, CAM team leader

LS Automotive and CGTech’s Korean team are communicating closely with adding VERICUT’s optimization module, OptiPath to the process. CGTech provides technical backgrounds and efficient utilization demos of the software, so the working teams can get familiar with and make the most out of the software. “We are collecting cutting data as we repeat the trials. I expect more benefit from the optimization module as we collect more data. The feedback from the shop is promising although we are on a very early stage of implementation.” – Kisoo Kim.

LS Automotive’s investment in new technology will be continued. “My priority is enabling the CAM team to be effective in taking on the new various opportunities coming in the future. It’s good to know that I can count on the CGTech team in doing so.” – Kisoo Kim
